Never too late to celebrate: where to celebrate a birthday in Cartagena
A long table by the fire, a toast and, at the weekend, the club until 3 am, all without changing venues.
A birthday in Cartagena has everything going for it: the weather, a beautiful city and friends happy to travel. The hard part is coordinating a group across dinner, transfers and a party. At Casa Salvaje we solve it with one address.
A birthday, Caribbean-style
On Colombia's Caribbean coast, a birthday is never just a dinner. Since colonial times, the parties on this coast have mixed African drums, Indigenous instruments and Spanish melodies, and from that mix came cumbia. Every celebration, however small, keeps something of that inheritance: you eat, you toast and, sooner or later, you dance.
The city knows a thing or two about famous birthdays. Joe Arroyo was born here on 1 November 1955, the singer who carried Cartagena's music far beyond Colombia. On Calle de la Factoría, inside the walled city, the painter Alejandro Obregón lived from 1968 until his death in 1992: the artist of condors, barracudas and Caribbean seas. And this is the city that inspired Love in the Time of Cholera, García Márquez's novel in which Florentino Ariza waits more than half a century to declare his love to Fermina Daza once more.
If any place knows it's never too late to celebrate, it's Cartagena.
I · Dinner
A long table
For groups, Kanibal works beautifully for a long table around the fire. If the occasion calls for something more dressed up, SLVJ is the feast: stone, velvet, amber light and a sushi bar.
II · The party
Until 3 am
Thursday to Saturday, after dinner, SLVJ turns into a club until 3 am. Reserve a club table so your group has its spot when the room fills.
If the birthday falls in November, even better: around 11 November the whole city celebrates its independence, declared in 1811, with dance troupes, drums and parades through the streets.
